It is the end of the First century A.D. and the Roman Empire is expanding outwards. The military commander Marcus Ulpius Traianus was adopted by the unpopular Emperor Nerva in a political bid to prevent a revolt by the Praetorian Guard.
On Nerva’s death, his adopted son who was popular with the army, was declared Emperor and he took the name - Imperator Caesar Nerva Traianus Divi Nervae filius Augustus. He became known as Trajan to historians.
At the same time this was happening in Rome, the Time Patrol lost an agent in that wet and windy collection of islands called Britannia. The agent was close to locating those responsible for recruiting men who were trained in making a weapon that was not to be seen in warfare for another thousand years or more – the long bow.
Not only were they training those who could make the weapon, but also those who could use it. What possible purpose would anyone have to recruit an army of archers before their time?
Under Trajan, Romans would see the expansion of the Empire to its maximum extent, but what would happen to the Roman Empire, and later the Roman Catholic Church, if the Empire was defeated in the first few years of the second century?
The implications for Western civilisation were dire, so another agent was despatched to locate those responsible for the first man’s death and for getting to the root of the problem, and then dealing with it.
That agent is Sergeant Edward Ryan, USMC, only for the second time he chooses to go as someone they’d least suspect.
This is a time when women are little more than slaves, so the unknown enemy would never suspect a female adversary, and one from some obscure British Tribe that is in the middle of a battle with the Romans themselves.

Once more, I feel Tanya's book is too short! I wanted this one to go on and on...I had just re-read Marine 1 and then finished Marine 2 in a couple of days. Another terrific book that fills in some gaps from book 1. This is a great series, tg mixed with time travel and historical periods and I hope it goes on for many more. There were some typos (I'll email them to you) but none that really took from the story; the writing is always good. The book reminded me, in mood, of Tarr & Turtledove's Household Gods (if you haven't read that, I strongly recommend it).I hope that at some point, our marine will get pushed into a suitable body in his present time. There's a good amount of historical research as well as combat and some sex. Highly recommended!

Marine 2 A Very Unusual Roman The Agent of time eBook Tanya Allan Reviews
A good story from a good author. Second in the series. It showed a great deal of investigation and research into the activities of the time. Well thought out, seemed to be a little unrealistic, but then, I haven't researched the actual possibility of a woman in charge of a battle unit in the Roman Army. Also the ending seemed a bit contrived, probably to avoid writing about the end of her life.
A good, readable story.
When I read many of Tanya Allah's stories I am treated to a wonderful mix of entertainment, action, relationship exploration, history, geography, tactics, and adventure. This is one of those stories.
Great sequel. Interesting historical setting, with a anachronistic point of view, well it's time travel so what do you expect.
Another action plus gender swap story.
Amazing when I rate one of Tanya's books the next all ways seems to be even better. She can take the same theme and make it different and better. Can't wait for the next installment.
Love the time travel and toss in the gender change to confuse the enemy. Loads of historical research went into this book. Love Tanya's works, have about 40 so far and have yet to find one that I would NOT give a 5 star rating to.
Thanks Tanya, once again a great read. I love the idea of time travel & this one fills the bill. Obviously you have done a huge amount of research for this & are to commended for it.
If you like time travel then this will be one for you. Looking now for book 3.
Amazing! Tanya Allan have done it again. The series “Agent of Time” follows a brilliant story line, returning to a point in history where changes could impose massive changes in later history.
Still there is a transgender backdrop with its own twist, but this is no longer important to the story development. Instead, based on a high tension action development within a historical setting, all the books make up stories very hard to put away before the conclusion. And you keep wishing there were more!
Tanya has an exceptional ability to renew her writing. Her stories are very well researched and logical in their development.
“Agent of Time” are among her best SciFi stories so far, but I am sure we can expect more from her later!
