Other reviews have a synopsis, so I won't say much about the overall story line.3.5 stars for excellent writing, and for packing a great deal into a novella and doing it skillfully. It says a lot for Ms Romain's talent.
I liked the H and the h - I probably felt a greater affinity for the H and appreciated his quiet, modest manner, and the depth and passion underneath that reserved exterior. I would not have minded a full-blown novel featuring these two, and I imagine they will make appearances in other books in the series.
I am still scratching my head about what can only be described as - using a term I've seen in other reviews - a 'mistorical' moment - wherein this very inexperienced couple - 'gently bred' and in the 1800's, no less - sneaks off to indulge in a tryst, graphically described and casually enjoyed, as if it were just another day at the races. Leaving aside the fact that I prefer novels with no intimate content, it just doesn't fit.
The novella seems to set things up very well for the series to follow.

The Sport of Baronets Romance of the Turf Book 0 edition by Theresa Romain Romance eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed the story, the characters, the romance, and the excitement of the race. Looking forward to the rest of this series by one of my favorite authors.
A well-built plot, with enough twists to keep the story moving along. While I enjoyed the main characters as individuals; the romance aspect fell flat for me. I did not feel a connection between them; and the sudden desire had no basis.
To be perfectly honest, it was the wit with which the writing had and the fact it centered about horses that had me finish this novella.
Oh, I wanted to like this book much better than did. It has witty banter. It is not about ballrooms. The heroine has agency.
I found myself pushing myself to finish it. I never invested in the characters or the romance.
Something was just off. Romain is a great writer but this just didn't make me believe in the love between the couple.
I was given this book for an honest review. So, there you have it.
I really enjoy Theresa Romain's writing on a whole, but some books are hit or miss for me. This was definitely a hit! The characters were likeable, there were horses (lots and lots of horses! Arguments about whose horse it was! Legal papers! Family feuds!) and it was nice to get away from the usual Regency setting of ballrooms and about town. The characters were very likable, I loved that they worked so well together (as grudging as it was at first) and truly enjoyed their happy ending.
This is a story of romeo and juliet style attraction, but it kind of fell flat without any real tension. The main characters have attraction and fall in love, without any real hurdles. The character growth is present, but feels a little easy to come by. Like, not enough happened in the story to spur the growth. I did enjoy it and I liked the characters and they made the right choices in the end, I think it needed a bigger THING in the middle to really force the characters to change and grow. Overall, I did like it, but I didn't buy the next in the series.
This story was a fun read. I enjoyed the idea of family feuding but end up connecting together in some way. With each family missing a parent/spouse and the remainder one being physically impaired it was being mirrored in circumstances. As well as absent siblings and the need to work out differences with the parents. I'm not sure if it was done so the two main characters were on equal footing or just happens to be the background. Hard to say. The book is short enough to read in one sitting if one likes and also contains steamy happenings for those who look for these kinds of books. And a warning to those who don't like reading them.
I don't particularly love stories about horse racing but this was a pretty good one. The story is about a feud between two families who raise, train, and race thoroughbred horses. The son of one family who is almost broke owns a horse that could win a big race; the daughter of the other wealthier family is sent to pick up the hose and take it to her family's stables because she has a bill of sale that says the horse is hers. There is lots of intrigue and questions about how the horse could have been sold without the owner, the son, knowing. Then the impossible happens and the horse is stolen right behind their backs. The son and the daughter have to work together to get the horse back. Of course they are attracted to each other and manage to sneak away to be alone. There is one rather short scene that I would consider R rated if it were a movie; it could not be shown on TV.
This is a novella, 120 pages, so it is a quick read. The characters were developed enough that I liked the H and h and they seemed to have good chemistry. This book was free and I would like to read more books in the series but their prices are way too high. I'll keep watching and maybe they will go on sale sometime.
